Azelaic acid

The Azelaic Acid (INCI: Azelaic Acid ) is one of the acids commonly used in the treatment of the melasma . Because, apart from its benefits for acne skin , skin with spots can also benefit from all its properties. Next I am going to talk a little more in depth about this important cosmetic asset that contains products as good as Sesderma Azelac Ru .

What is Azelaic Acid

I'm not going to get into technicalities, I leave that to my friend Azaim, who explains it much better in her blog Fully Educations . But so that you understand it , Azelaic Acid , also known as nonanedioic acid, is an active of natural origin that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory capacity .

It is currently used in numerous acne and depigmenting cosmetics. And it is usually one of the best active principles if you want to use acids and have sensitive skin.

But let's focus on the important things. Why azelaic acid is so good. It is a component with many properties, among which its bactericidal power stands out, also treating skin inflammation, which is why it is not only used in cases of acne but also in skin with rosacea or sensitive skin.

Antibacterial

One of its qualities is that it is an antibacterial product, preventing the proliferation of organisms that cause skin infections that result in comedones and acne .

Acne

It is for this reason that it is considered a good anti-acne treatment, significantly reducing the comedones that appear on the skin.

Azelaic acid is also antiseborrheic, reducing the sebum produced by our skin, preventing the accumulation of fat in the pore and therefore helping to prevent annoying pimples from appearing.

It acts like other active ingredients that are more aggressive for the skin, so skin alterations are always less using azelaic acid. Because as I have mentioned before, even sensitive skin can use it with little risk.

Anti-inflammatory

Its antioxidant work makes it a good element capable of reducing inflammation of the skin with irritation or sensitivity, such as rosacea .

Depigmenting

One of the properties for which azelaic acid has been best known in recent years is for being a good depigmenting agent . And as I mentioned in the previous section, by producing fewer reactions on the skin surface than other depigmenting agents such as retinol or glycolic, it can be used by all types of skin.

Perhaps what makes it so important is that it is selective. Its job is to treat the areas affected by excess pigmentation but the part that does not have hyperpigmentation is not affected by the treatment.

Uses of Azelaic Acid

In cosmetics, up to 20% can be used, which is its highest concentration within the treatments that you can perform at home.

Skins that can benefit from Azelaic Acid activity are oily or acne-prone skin . Also skin with redness or rosacea and of course skins that suffer from melasma .

In the latter case, the higher the skin color, the better the acelaic works. That is, if you have very fair skin, this active ingredient will take longer to take effect.

Being an acid, even though it is milder than others, it acts equally on the skin, so I always recommend that if it is used, protect the skin from the sun to avoid reactions or the proliferation of more spots. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding avoid azelaic acid.

And you, what products with azelaic acid do you use in your routine?
